Undergraduate Admission Guidelines

Information for applicants seeking admission into our Bachelor's degree programmes (B.A. History and B.A. History & Diplomatic Studies).

Important Notice

All undergraduate admissions are processed through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Candidates must choose University of Maiduguri as their first choice institution and meet the minimum cut-off mark for the current academic session.

Entry Requirements

UTME Candidates
  • Minimum of five (5) credit passes in SSCE/GCE/NECO or equivalent at not more than two sittings
  • Credits must include English Language, Mathematics, History/Government and any other two relevant subjects
  • Minimum UTME score of 150 (subject to change annually)
  • UTME subject combination: English, History/Government, and any two Arts/Social Science subjects
  • Post-UTME screening by the University
Direct Entry Candidates
  • Two A' Level passes in relevant subjects including History or Government
  • OND/NCE with minimum of Lower Credit in relevant fields
  • IJMB with minimum of 8 points
  • First degree in related discipline (for conversion programme)
  • Same O' Level requirements as UTME candidates

Application Process

Register for UTME/DE

Purchase and complete JAMB/UTME or Direct Entry form. Choose University of Maiduguri as your first choice institution and select your preferred History programme.

Take UTME Examination

Sit for the UTME examination and score at least the minimum cut-off mark set by the University for the current academic session.

Register for Post-UTME

After UTME results are released, register for the University of Maiduguri Post-UTME screening exercise on the university portal.

Admission & Clearance

If offered admission, accept the offer on JAMB portal, pay acceptance fee, and complete the admission clearance process at the University.

Postgraduate Admission Guidelines

Information for applicants seeking admission into our postgraduate programmes (PGD, M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in History and Strategic Studies).

Important Notice

Postgraduate admissions are handled directly by the University of Maiduguri School of Postgraduate Studies. All applications must be submitted through the University's postgraduate portal.

Programme Requirements

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
  • First degree in History or related discipline with at least Third Class Honours
  • HND with minimum of Lower Credit in relevant fields
  • Minimum of 5 O' Level credits including English and Mathematics
Master of Arts (M.A.)
  • First degree in History or related discipline with minimum of Second Class Lower
  • Postgraduate Diploma in History with minimum CGPA of 3.0/5.0
  • NYSC discharge/exemption certificate
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
  • M.A. degree in History or related field with minimum CGPA of 3.5/5.0
  • M.Phil. degree in relevant discipline
  • Evidence of academic publications may be required

Postgraduate Application Procedure
  1. Visit the University of Maiduguri Postgraduate School portal at spgs.unimaid.edu.ng
  2. Create an account with a valid email address
  3. Fill the online application form with accurate information
  4. Upload scanned copies of required documents:
    • Academic certificates and transcripts
    • NYSC discharge/exemption certificate
    • Birth certificate or declaration of age
    • Passport photograph
    • Research proposal (for M.A. and Ph.D. applicants)
  5. Pay the application fee online via the portal
  6. Submit your application and print the acknowledgment slip

Frequently Asked Questions

The minimum UTME score for History programmes is 150. However, the actual cut-off mark may be higher depending on the number of applicants and performance in the Post-UTME screening.

No, a credit pass in History or Government is mandatory for both UTME and Direct Entry admissions into History programmes. However, candidates with related social science subjects may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The M.A. programme in History is designed to be completed in 18 months (3 semesters) for full-time students and 24 months (4 semesters) for part-time students. This includes coursework and thesis writing.

There is no specific age limit for postgraduate applications. However, candidates must meet all academic requirements and be physically and mentally fit to undertake the programme.

Undergraduate admission lists are usually released in August/September, while postgraduate lists are released in August. Candidates are advised to regularly check the university portal and their email for updates.
